The Office of Justice R. Mahadevan, Judge of the Supreme Court of India, invites applications for a full-time physical judicial internship for May 2026.

About Justice R. Mahadevan

R. Mahadevan is a sitting Judge of the Supreme Court of India and has previously served as a Judge of the Madras High Court. Over the course of his judicial career, he has contributed significantly to constitutional interpretation, administrative law jurisprudence, taxation matters, service law disputes, and regulatory governance issues.

Judicial internships under sitting judges of the Supreme Court provide students with rare exposure to constitutional adjudication processes, courtroom procedures at the highest judicial level, and the internal functioning of the apex court. Such internships are considered among the most valuable learning opportunities for law students interested in litigation, judicial clerkships, public law practice, and academic research.

About the Internship

The Office of Justice R. Mahadevan is inviting applications for a full-time physical internship for the month of May 2026. The internship is designed to provide structured exposure to judicial research work and the functioning of the Supreme Court of India.

Selected interns will assist the office in preparing case notes, conducting legal research on pending matters, and observing court proceedings before the Supreme Court. The internship offers an opportunity to understand how constitutional questions, statutory interpretation issues, and appellate matters are examined at the highest level of judicial scrutiny.

Participants will gain familiarity with courtroom procedures, case briefing methods, and research approaches used in judicial decision-making environments. Exposure to such processes helps students strengthen analytical reasoning skills and develop clarity in legal writing and argument structuring.

Nature of Work Responsibilities and Exposure

Interns selected for this programme will assist in preparing case notes related to matters listed before the Supreme Court. Preparation of case notes involves analysing pleadings, identifying legal issues, reviewing precedents, and summarising arguments presented by parties.

Interns will also conduct legal research on statutory provisions, constitutional questions, and judicial precedents relevant to ongoing cases before the Court. Such assignments strengthen interpretative skills and provide insight into how courts engage with complex legal questions involving multiple jurisdictions and statutory frameworks.

The internship further includes opportunities to observe court proceedings before the Supreme Court, enabling students to understand courtroom advocacy techniques, procedural practices, and judicial interactions during hearings. Observation of live proceedings enhances familiarity with appellate litigation strategy and constitutional adjudication processes.

Through these responsibilities, interns develop practical exposure to judicial workflows that are rarely accessible outside formal clerkship environments.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must satisfy the following eligibility requirements:

Students in the third year or above of a five-year integrated law programme are eligible to apply
Students in the second year or above of a three-year LL.B. programme are eligible to apply

Applicants should demonstrate strong legal research ability, interest in constitutional law and appellate litigation, and the capacity to undertake structured legal writing assignments within strict timelines.

Skills Benefits and Learning Outcomes

Interns will gain exposure to research methodologies followed in judicial chambers at the Supreme Court level. Participation in case note preparation strengthens issue identification skills and improves understanding of precedent-based reasoning.

The internship also enhances familiarity with constitutional interpretation techniques and appellate advocacy frameworks. Observing proceedings before the Supreme Court allows interns to develop insight into courtroom strategy, procedural discipline, and judicial reasoning patterns.

Such experience is particularly valuable for students preparing for careers in litigation practice, judicial clerkships, constitutional law research, or higher academic studies in public law.
