SEBI invites applications from law students for paid internships in its Legal Department at Mumbai.
About the Securities and Exchange Board of India
The Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) is the regulatory body for the securities market in India. The Legal Department of SEBI handles matters involving litigation before the Supreme Court of India, High Courts, the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) and the Special Court, and offers internships to acquaint students with the landscape of securities laws in India.
About the Internship
The internship in the Legal Department at SEBI is offered to students pursuing three-year and five-year law courses, with a maximum of 4 interns selected in a month at the Head Office of SEBI at Mumbai throughout the year. Internship opportunities may also be available at the Regional Offices of SEBI at New Delhi (during June and July), Kolkata (during May and June), Ahmedabad (during May and June) and Chennai (during May and June).
Eligibility Criteria
- The applicant must be a student of a Law School/University recognised by the Bar Council of India and the University Grants Commission.
- The applicant should be in the 4th or final year of a five-year law programme or in the 2nd or final year of a three-year law programme as on the date of the application. Students who have already appeared in the final semester examination are not eligible.
- The applicant should have secured a minimum of 60% aggregate marks or equivalent CGPA in the previous semester results.
- The applicant should be below the age of 28 years.
Duration and Working Hours
The tenure of the internship shall be not less than four weeks, commencing on the 1st working day of the month. The internship is on a full-time basis, and interns are required to report at the designated office from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM on all working days.
Roles and Responsibilities
The internship assignment would include:
- Legal research on assigned topics.
- Preparing briefs and write-ups on legal issues.
- Assisting in preparing summaries of ongoing cases.
- Exposure to litigation before the Supreme Court of India, High Courts, the Securities Appellate Tribunal (SAT) and the Special Court.
- Preparation of case compendium relevant to the securities markets.
- Research on recent developments in securities markets in foreign jurisdictions.
Stipend
A stipend of ₹10,000 may be provided to the interns upon issuance of the certificate of internship.
Certificate of Internship
Upon successful and satisfactory completion of the internship, a certificate of internship shall be issued to the interns.
Mode and Location
The internship is a full-time opportunity requiring interns to physically report at the offices of SEBI assigned to them. The Head Office internships are based at Mumbai, and the Regional Office internships are available at New Delhi, Kolkata, Ahmedabad and Chennai during the months mentioned above.

Application Procedure
Applications for the internship shall be submitted only through the online application portal available on the SEBI website. The application window shall be open from the 1st to the 7th of every month, for seeking internship during the immediate succeeding month. A duly filled, signed and stamped cover letter on the letterhead of the applicant’s Law School/College/University, in the prescribed format, must be uploaded along with the application.
Selection of candidates shall be based on merit, considering the aggregate percentage obtained by the applicant during the previous semesters. The shortlisted applicants shall be intimated through email, and they must communicate their acceptance within two days of its receipt.
