WIPO IP Moot Court Competition 2027 [Hybrid; Funded Geneva Finals]: Apply by November 6!

5 Min Read

WIPO invites eligible law students to its 2027 IP Moot Court Competition, with Geneva finals on June 8–10. Apply by November 6, 2026.

About WIPO

The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) organises the competition under its Intellectual Property and Youth Empowerment Strategy, IP-YES! The initiative develops students’ intellectual property knowledge, written and oral advocacy, critical analysis and legal reasoning through simulated disputes.

About the Competition

The third edition involves written memorials and oral arguments on a hypothetical intellectual property dispute. The 2027 problem will explore live streaming, innovation, intellectual property rights and online enforcement. The competition, including applications, is conducted entirely in English.

Mode and Venue

Application and written submissions are online. Virtual oral rounds take place on Zoom from March 1–12, 2027. The top eight teams advance to the in-person finals at WIPO Headquarters, Geneva, Switzerland, on June 8–10, 2027.

Eligibility and Team Composition

  • Students must be aged 35 or younger at application and enrolled full-time or part-time in a programme leading to a law degree.
  • Applicants must not have previously completed a law degree or been admitted to practise in any jurisdiction. Past competition winners are ineligible.
  • Each team consists of two students from the same university and may include one coach who is a student or faculty member of that university.
  • University authorisation is required. Exceptionally for 2027, more than two teams may apply from a university, but at most two may advance to the written round.
  • Coaches may give general guidance but cannot contribute substantively to memorials or oral arguments. Team changes require written approval.

Competition Structure

Teams are selected through a video application. Selected teams submit Applicant and Respondent memorials and participate in virtual oral rounds, arguing both sides. The eight highest combined memorial and virtual-round scores qualify for Geneva. The final rounds comprise quarter-finals, semi-finals and the grand finale; earlier scores do not carry forward.

Memorial Submission Guidelines

Submit two anonymous Microsoft Word memorials, each limited to 3,000 words including headings and footnotes, excluding the cover, contents and authorities index. Remove identifying information from document metadata. Follow the official formatting rules and submit the signed Plagiarism and AI Use Declaration. The rules restrict outside assistance and prohibit AI-generated substantive submissions.

Registration Fee and Travel Support

There is no registration fee. Qualifying student participants receive funded travel and accommodation for the Geneva finals, with required visa fees and supporting documents. Coaches’ travel and accommodation are not funded. Participants must arrange valid passports and visas and bear additional visa-related costs.
