National Law School of India University (NLSIU) is inviting applications for a full-time contractual Paralegal Assistant position with its Citizenship and Immigration Law Clinic. The position will be based in Assam, with a focus on Goalpara and Matia.
The Clinic provides legal assistance in matters concerning citizenship and immigration law and undertakes legal and policy research in this area. Its work includes legal representation and advice relating to citizenship determination, asylum and refugee status, deportation and detention.
About the Opportunity
NLSIU is offering one Paralegal Assistant position for a period of one year, which may be extended based on performance. The Paralegal Assistant will serve as the primary link between the Clinicβs lawyers and clients.
The role will involve collecting information from clients, assisting with document translation, conducting legal aid camps and supporting training programmes for lawyers and other paralegals. The position will particularly focus on identifying individuals within the detention system who require legal representation.

Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must hold a Bachelorβs degree, with Law or Social Work preferred, or have significant paralegal experience.
- Fluency in Assamese, both written and spoken, is essential.
- Prior experience working with Legal Services Authorities such as DLSA or SLSA is desirable.
Roles & Responsibilities
Legal Aid Camps
The Paralegal Assistant will organise and conduct monthly legal-aid camps at the Matia Detention Centre in Assam.
Stakeholder Coordination
The Paralegal Assistant will coordinate activities with the Assam Legal Services Authority and the Goalpara District Legal Services Authority.
Client Intake
The role will involve collecting relevant information from detainees during legal-aid camps and identifying individuals who require quality legal representation.
Case Initiation
The Paralegal Assistant will assist in initiating cases wherever necessary based on the information gathered during legal-aid camps.
Client & Document Support
The Paralegal Assistant will collect relevant information from clients and assist with the translation of documents.
Training Programmes
The role will also involve assisting in organising training programmes for lawyers and other paralegals.
Salary
The salary will be commensurate with the candidateβs qualifications, experience and University norms.
