The order was passed by a bench comprising Chief Justice of India Surya Kant, Justice Joymalya Bagchi and Justice V. Mohana while hearing a Public Interest Litigation challenging statutory schemes relating to the provincialisation of teachers and employees of educational institutions.
The petition raises a larger question about whether people can enter government teaching service without going through a fair, transparent and competitive recruitment process. The petitioners have argued that such a system may violate the constitutional guarantee of equality before law and equality of opportunity in public employment.
The Courtโs interim direction refers to qualifications prescribed under the Right to Education Act, the National Council for Teacher Education (NCTE) Act and the University Grants Commission (UGC) Act. This means that the statutory qualifications applicable to teachers cannot simply be bypassed through a provincialisation scheme. (Live Law)
The case also involves Articles 14, 16, 21A and 254 of the Constitution. Article 14 deals with equality before law, while Article 16 guarantees equality of opportunity in matters of public employment. Article 21A provides for the right to education for children between six and fourteen years of age. Article 254 deals with situations where a law made by a State Legislature conflicts with a law made by Parliament on a Concurrent List subject.
It is important to note that this is an interim order. The Supreme Court has not finally decided the constitutional validity of the provincialisation scheme.
India and China Hold First Senior Military Commander-Level Flag Meeting in Arunachal Sector
India and China have held their first Senior Highest Military Commander-Level Flag Meeting in the eastern sector along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).
The first meeting was held at Wacha on the Indian side in Arunachal Pradesh on 6 September, followed by a meeting at Damai on the Chinese side on 7 September. The Ministry of External Affairs said the meetings followed understandings reached through the Special Representativesโ mechanism and subsequent discussions under the Working Mechanism for Consultation and Coordination (WMCC). (Akashvani News)
A flag meeting is a military-level meeting between the two sides along a disputed or sensitive border. Such meetings provide a channel for commanders to communicate directly, discuss local issues and prevent tensions from escalating.
The LAC is the de facto boundary separating Indian-controlled territory from Chinese-controlled territory. Unlike an internationally agreed boundary, the LAC is not accepted in exactly the same manner by both countries, which is one reason why border management remains sensitive.
The meeting comes as India and China continue efforts to stabilise relations after the tensions that followed the 2020 military confrontation in eastern Ladakh. It also comes shortly before the 18th BRICS Summit, which India will host in New Delhi on 12โ13 September.
The development is worth following because it combines two important aspects of India-China relations: maintaining peace along the border and gradually restoring diplomatic engagement.
India Prepares for the 18th BRICS Summit
India will host the 18th BRICS Summit in New Delhi on 12โ13 September 2026. The summit will be held during Indiaโs BRICS chairship for 2026. (Press Information Bureau)
BRICS began as a grouping of Brazil, Russia, India and China. South Africa later joined, and the grouping has since expanded to include additional members. The expanded grouping gives BRICS a much larger representation of the developing world and the Global South.
Indiaโs chairship this year is built around four broad pillars: Resilience, Innovation, Cooperation and Sustainability. The summit is expected to bring discussions on areas such as trade, finance, technology, energy and reform of global institutions.
China has publicly expressed support for Indiaโs hosting of the summit. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said China supports India in successfully hosting this yearโs leadersโ summit. (Chinese Embassy India)
The summit is particularly important for India because it comes at a time when India and China are also trying to improve bilateral relations. The two countries have recently resumed several diplomatic and military-level engagements, while differences over trade, technology and the border remain.
For CLAT, students should know the difference between BRICS as an international grouping and institutions created through BRICS cooperation. The New Development Bank, for example, was established by the BRICS countries to finance infrastructure and sustainable-development projects.
Rajnath Singh Visits Sri Lanka to Strengthen Defence and Maritime Cooperation
Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is on a three-day official visit to Sri Lanka from 8 to 10 September 2026. The visit is focused on strengthening defence and maritime cooperation between the two countries. (Akashvani News)
Sri Lankaโs geographical position makes it important to Indiaโs maritime security. The island lies close to Indiaโs southern coastline and near important shipping routes in the Indian Ocean.
India and Sri Lanka cooperate in areas including defence, maritime security, training and regional security. Their relationship also extends to trade, development projects, culture and people-to-people ties.
The visit is part of Indiaโs wider engagement with its neighbours under the Neighbourhood First approach. Sri Lanka is particularly important within this framework because developments in the island nation can have a direct bearing on Indiaโs security and economic interests in the Indian Ocean.
The visit also comes at a time when India is seeking deeper cooperation with countries across the Indian Ocean region. Maritime security has become increasingly important for India because a large share of its trade and energy supplies moves through sea routes.
9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah Begins
The 9th Rashtriya Poshan Maah is being launched on 9 September 2026 at Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, by Union Minister for Women and Child Development Annpurna Devi. The campaign will run for a month. (Press Information Bureau)
The theme for Poshan Maah 2026 is โHamari Anganwadi, Hamari Jimmedariโ, which means โOur Anganwadi, Our Responsibilityโ.
This yearโs campaign places Anganwadi Centres at the centre of community-based efforts relating to nutrition, childcare and early childhood development.
Anganwadi Centres are part of Indiaโs Integrated Child Development Services (ICDS) framework and provide services such as supplementary nutrition, health-related support and early childhood care.
The 2026 campaign focuses on dietary diversity, adequate protein intake, hygiene, nutrition for women and children, and greater community participation in the functioning of Anganwadi Centres. It also seeks to strengthen Anganwadi Management Committees.
Poshan Maah is part of Indiaโs broader efforts to address malnutrition. Poor nutrition can affect childrenโs physical growth, learning ability and long-term health. The issue therefore goes beyond food distribution and is connected with education, public health and human development.
Government Approves โน735 Crore Investment Plans for ITI Clusters
The government has approved strategic investment plans worth more than โน735 crore for Industrial Training Institute (ITI) clusters in Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana.
The approvals were given at the fifth meeting of the National Steering Committee of PM-SETU, the Pradhan Mantri Skilling and Employability Transformation through Upgraded ITIs scheme. (Akashvani News)
The approved investment includes about โน241 crore for Rajasthan, more than โน240 crore for Uttar Pradesh and โน254 crore for Telangana.
PM-SETU aims to modernise Indiaโs ITI ecosystem by improving infrastructure, upgrading training programmes and making vocational education more closely aligned with industry requirements.
The scheme follows a Hub-and-Spoke model. Under this approach, a better-equipped โHub ITIโ supports a network of โSpoke ITIsโ. The idea is to allow resources, infrastructure and industry-linked training to be shared across a cluster rather than developing every institution separately.
The latest approvals take the total sanctioned investment under PM-SETU to around โน2,171 crore across nine ITI clusters. (Akashvani News)

Global Fintech Fest 2026 Focuses on AI, Tokenisation and Quantum Technology
The 7th Global Fintech Fest (GFF) 2026 is being held in Mumbai from 8 to 11 September. Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the event on 8 September. (Press Information Bureau)
The theme of this yearโs festival is โPotential to Impact: Agentic AI, Tokenisation, Quantum โ Trusted, Connected, Global Systems for Inclusive Finance.โ
Fintech refers to the use of technology to provide or improve financial services. Indiaโs growth in this field has been closely linked with digital public infrastructure such as Aadhaar, UPI and DigiLocker.
One of the major areas discussed at the event is Agentic AI. Unlike a system that simply responds to individual instructions, an agentic AI system can be designed to plan and carry out a sequence of actions to achieve a particular objective, subject to appropriate controls.
Tokenisation refers to representing an asset or value digitally in the form of tokens. In financial markets, tokenisation can potentially make transactions, settlement and fractional ownership more efficient.
The event also focuses on quantum technology and its possible applications in finance. At the same time, the growing use of technology in financial services raises questions about cybersecurity, data protection, fraud prevention and consumer protection.
These issues are increasingly relevant as financial services move from traditional banking systems towards digital platforms.
Five Baby Orangutans Found in Odisha
Five baby orangutans were found in a forest near Badapai village in Balasore district of Odisha on 8 September. The animals were rescued by the forest department after local residents spotted them in the area. (The Indian Express)
The discovery is unusual because orangutans are not native to India and do not occur naturally in Indian forests. Orangutans are naturally found in parts of Southeast Asia.
Forest officials have therefore begun an investigation into how the animals reached Odisha. Officials have raised the possibility of illegal wildlife trafficking, although the investigation will have to establish their actual origin and how they were transported.
The incident brings attention to the problem of illegal wildlife trade. Wildlife trafficking involves the illegal capture, transport and sale of wild animals or their body parts. It is a major threat to endangered species.
Orangutans are also classified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List. Their conservation is therefore an important environmental issue.
The incident is particularly useful for connecting current affairs with static environmental knowledge: orangutans are not naturally found in India, and their natural range is in Southeast Asia.
A Quick Look at the Economy
Indian equity markets remained under pressure on 8 September as rising crude oil prices and concerns over geopolitical tensions affected investor sentiment. The Nifty 50 fell 0.61%, while the BSE Sensex declined 0.73%. Brent crude moved close to the $100-per-barrel level. (Reuters)
Higher crude prices matter for India because the country imports a large share of its crude oil requirements. A sustained increase in international oil prices can raise Indiaโs import bill and put pressure on the rupee and inflation.
The RBI was also reported to have intervened in the foreign-exchange market as the rupee weakened to around โน94.68 per US dollar on 8 September. (Reuters)
For students, the basic connection is important: higher crude prices โ higher import costs โ possible pressure on the current account, inflation and the rupee.
