The Bar Council of India has stated that law colleges without valid approval for the 2026–27 academic session cannot admit students, as several National Law Universities are yet to reflect renewed approval on the BCI’s list.
BCI Issues Fresh Warning to Law Colleges
The Bar Council of India (BCI) has reiterated that any Centre of Legal Education (CLE) that has not completed the approval renewal process by the prescribed deadline will not be permitted to admit students or conduct law programmes during the 2026–27 academic session.
The clarification follows the expiry of the final deadline for renewal applications on July 31, 2026.
Several NLUs Yet to Reflect Updated Approval
According to the latest list of approved institutions available on the BCI portal, several National Law Universities continue to show approval gaps for one or more law programmes.
These include:
- National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru
- National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal
- National Law University Odisha (NLUO), Cuttack
- Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU), Raipur
- Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU), Tiruchirappalli
- Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar
Meanwhile, the National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi, has since secured renewed approval.
Approval List Does Not Necessarily Indicate Non-Compliance
The BCI clarified that the absence of an institution from the updated approval list does not automatically mean that it failed to apply within time.
According to the Council, renewal is granted only after scrutiny of the application and, wherever necessary, inspection by the competent authority.
Therefore, approval may still be under consideration even if it is yet to appear on the official list.
BCI Explains What Constitutes a Valid Application
The Council has emphasised that an application is treated as validly submitted only after all mandatory documents are uploaded, the prescribed fee is paid and the application is finally submitted through the online portal.
Merely creating a draft application, uploading partial documents or making incomplete payments does not amount to a valid submission.
The BCI further stated that payment of fees or filing an application alone does not create any right to admit students.
Colleges Must Admit Students Only Against Approved Courses
The circular reminds every Centre of Legal Education that admissions can be conducted only for courses, sections and approved intake that hold valid BCI approval for the current academic session.
The Council has cautioned institutions against admitting students to programmes lacking subsisting approval, reiterating that compliance with the Rules of Legal Education remains mandatory.
Multiple Extensions Were Granted
The BCI noted that institutions had already received several opportunities to complete the renewal process.
The original deadline of December 31, 2025 was extended successively to January 16, March 5 and finally July 31, 2026, giving institutions additional time to comply with the regulatory requirements.
