The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU) invites applications for its Summer 2027 Legal Internship in the Human Rights Program. The ten-week opportunity offers experience in human rights research, litigation support and domestic and international advocacy.

About ACLU

The ACLU works to defend individual rights and civil liberties in the United States. Its Human Rights Program uses international human rights frameworks to support advocacy on issues including immigrants’ rights, prisoners’ rights, criminal law reform, free speech and racial justice.

About the Internship

Interns will work with the Human Rights Program at the ACLU’s national office in New York. The role involves research, drafting and support for advocacy before domestic, regional and international bodies.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be law students who will have completed their first year of law school before the internship begins. Candidates must remain based in the United States throughout the internship.

Roles and Responsibilities

Interns will work on:

  • Human rights, legal and policy research.
  • Legal memoranda, affidavits and briefs.
  • Research supporting potential litigation.
  • Public education and human rights documentation.
  • Materials for advocacy before regional and international bodies.

Duration and Work Mode

The internship runs for ten consecutive weeks, starting on May 24 or June 7, 2027.

It requires 35 hours per week and follows a hybrid work arrangement based in New York.

Stipend

Eligible students who are lawfully authorised to work will receive $24 per hour, subject to taxation.

Outside funding may reduce the ACLU’s contribution so that combined funding reaches the organisation’s stipulated summer stipend level.
