Supreme Court Delivers Split Verdict on Appointment of Election Commissioners

The Supreme Court has delivered a split verdict on whether petitions challenging the law governing the appointment of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and Election Commissioners (ECs) should be referred to a larger Constitution Bench.

The case concerns the Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners (Appointment, Conditions of Service and Term of Office) Act, 2023. The law changed the composition of the committee that selects the CEC and other Election Commissioners.

Under the 2023 law, the Selection Committee consists of the Prime Minister, a Union Cabinet Minister nominated by the Prime Minister, and the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.

The earlier arrangement had included the Chief Justice of India in the selection process. The exclusion of the CJI has been challenged on the ground that the new arrangement could affect the perceived independence of the Election Commission.

The two judges hearing the matter disagreed on whether the challenge should be sent to a five-judge Constitution Bench. Justice Dipankar Datta did not favour the reference, while Justice Satish Chandra Sharma considered that the constitutional questions raised warranted consideration by a larger Bench. Because the judges differed, the matter will now go before the Chief Justice of India for appropriate directions.

The case brings Article 324 of the Constitution into focus. Article 324 establishes the Election Commission of India and gives it superintendence, direction and control over elections to Parliament, State Legislatures and the offices of the President and Vice-President.

A split verdict does not mean that the Supreme Court has finally upheld or struck down the 2023 law. The disagreement at this stage is about how the constitutional challenge should proceed.

India’s Banking System to Remain Open on Sunday Before Nationwide Strike

The Ministry of Finance has announced that Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks will remain fully operational on Sunday, 27 September 2026.

The decision comes before a proposed three-day nationwide bank strike from 28 to 30 September, called by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU). The government said the Sunday opening would help ensure that customers do not face an extended disruption because 26 September is the fourth Saturday and 27 September is Sunday.

The Reserve Bank of India has approved the opening of bank branches, offices, ATM-linked branches and currency chests on 27 September.

The proposed strike is linked to demands raised by bank unions, including the demand for a five-day working week for banks. The government and bank managements have appealed to unions to defer the strike.

For students, this is a useful example of how banking services are affected not only by RBI regulations but also by labour and industrial relations. It also brings the role of Public Sector Banks, Regional Rural Banks and the RBI into focus.

Mirabai Chanu Wins Silver at Asian Games

Indian weightlifter Mirabai Chanu won the silver medal in the women’s 49 kg category at the 2026 Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan.

She lifted a combined 198 kg. The medal ended India’s 28-year wait for a weightlifting medal at the Asian Games. The previous Indian to win an Asian Games weightlifting medal was Karnam Malleswari, who won silver in 1998.

The medal is also notable because it is Mirabai Chanu’s first Asian Games medal. She had previously won an Olympic silver medal and several international titles.

The Asian Games are the largest multi-sport event in Asia and are organised by the Olympic Council of Asia. The 2026 edition is being held in Aichi-Nagoya, Japan, from 19 September to 4 October.

India’s Men’s Badminton Team Reaches Asian Games Semifinals

India’s men’s badminton team has entered the semifinals of the 2026 Asian Games after defeating Japan 3–0 in the quarterfinal.

The Indian team includes leading players such as Lakshya Sen and the men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty. India secured a medal by reaching the semifinal stage.

The Asian Games award medals at the team-event stage based on the competition format. Reaching the semifinal guarantees India a place in the medal positions, with the team going on to compete for gold or silver and, depending on the semifinal result, bronze.

Deep Depression Forms Over Bay of Bengal

The India Meteorological Department has reported a deep depression over the west-central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal.

According to the IMD, the system was expected to cross the North Andhra Pradesh–South Odisha coast. A deep depression is a stronger stage of a tropical weather system than a depression but is below the classification of a cyclonic storm.

The system has brought heavy rainfall to parts of Andhra Pradesh and Odisha, with authorities taking precautionary measures in affected areas.

The Bay of Bengal is particularly important in Indian weather systems because tropical disturbances forming over it can move towards the eastern coast and produce heavy rainfall, strong winds and flooding.

Donald Trump and Xi Jinping Meet Amid Trade and Technology Tensions

US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are meeting in Washington during Xi’s state visit to the United States from 23 to 25 September.

The talks come against the background of continuing US-China tensions over tariffs, artificial intelligence, rare-earth minerals, technology restrictions and Taiwan. The two countries have moved from the intense tariff confrontation of earlier years towards a more cautious trade truce, but major differences remain.

Artificial intelligence and advanced technology have become an increasingly important part of the relationship. The United States has imposed restrictions on the export of certain advanced technologies to China, while China has sought greater access to technology and has focused on strengthening its own technological capabilities.

Rare-earth elements are another important issue. These minerals are used in products ranging from electronics and electric vehicles to defence equipment. China is a major player in the global rare-earth supply chain.

Taiwan remains one of the most sensitive issues in US-China relations. China claims Taiwan as part of its territory, while Taiwan operates under its own government and maintains extensive economic and political relations with other countries.

The Mera Yuva Bharat (MY Bharat) platform has crossed three crore registered youth.

MY Bharat was launched in 2023 under the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports. It provides opportunities for young people to participate in volunteering, experiential learning, leadership activities and community engagement.

The platform is designed to connect young people with activities outside traditional classroom education. It focuses on giving youth opportunities to participate in community development and gain practical experience.

The three-crore milestone is therefore a measure of the platform’s reach rather than the number of people employed or trained through a single programme.

KAVACH 4.0 Commissioned on South Central Railway

Indian Railways has commissioned KAVACH 4.0 for the first time on the South Central Railway.

The upgraded version has been deployed over 108 route kilometres on the Malkajgiri–Kamareddi section of the Hyderabad Division.

KAVACH is India’s indigenous Automatic Train Protection (ATP) system. It is designed to improve railway safety by monitoring train movement and helping prevent accidents caused by situations such as a train passing a signal that requires it to stop.

The system uses communication and signalling technologies installed both on trains and along railway infrastructure. When necessary, it can automatically apply brakes according to the safety conditions programmed into the system.

The latest version, KAVACH 4.0, includes improvements in positioning accuracy and communication with railway signalling and interlocking systems.

The development is part of India’s wider effort to modernise railway safety using domestically developed technology.

India Launches New Push for Air Mobility Technology

The Technology Development Board under the Department of Science and Technology has approved ₹285 crore in RDI support for Ubifly Technologies for next-generation air mobility technology.

The project is linked to India’s efforts to develop new forms of aviation and mobility technology.

The term RDI refers to Research, Development and Innovation. Government support in this area is intended to help companies develop technologies that may have commercial and strategic applications.

Next-generation air mobility can include technologies such as advanced electric aircraft, unmanned aerial systems and other new forms of short-distance aviation. The development of such technologies also raises questions relating to aviation regulation, safety, airspace management and infrastructure.
