A scene in the upcoming Mirzapur: The Movie has come under scrutiny before the Delhi High Court over the use of the ‘Shoorveer’ song during a violent sequence.
The issue came up before a Division Bench of Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tejas Karia on September 17 while hearing a public interest petition concerning the song’s use in the film.
The petitioner, Prashant Kumar Singh, objected to the placement of the track, arguing that a song associated with Maharana Pratap should not be used alongside a sequence involving fictional gangsters.
Court Questions the Creative Choice
The Bench questioned the context in which the song has been used and raised concerns about the impression created by pairing it with violence.
The Court remarked:
“We have come to a situation where we are revering violence?”
The judges further observed that the use of the song in the particular sequence did not, at first glance, appear to be in good taste.
Filmmakers Say No Connection to Maharana Pratap
Representing the producers, counsel submitted that the disputed portion simply portrays the film’s protagonist fighting a group of goons.
The producers maintained that the scene was not intended as a comparison with Maharana Pratap and had no connection with the historical figure.
The Court did not make any final determination regarding the filmmakers’ creative choice at this stage.
Song May Be Replaced
The Court was subsequently informed that the production team had already submitted proposed modifications to the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
One of the proposed changes is to replace the ‘Shoorveer’ track in the disputed sequence with background music.
The CBFC told the Court that it would examine the proposal and communicate its decision within a week.
The petitioner had also expressed concern that the proceedings could become ineffective if the film moves to OTT release before the issue is addressed.
The matter has been listed for September 24.
