The University focuses on advancing knowledge through instructional and research facilities and on the academic, cultural, social, and economic development of the hill areas of Northeast India.
About Department of Law, NEHU
The Department of Law, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, was established in 2005 and focuses on legal education, clinical legal education, advocacy, and professional development. It currently offers B.A. LL.B. (Hons.), LL.M., and Ph.D. programmes and has more than 300 students.
About the Opportunity
The 3rd North-Eastern Hill University National Moot Court Competition, 2026, marks the return of the competition after eight years. The competition aims to bring together law students from different regions and provide a platform for legal research, memorial drafting, oral advocacy, and discussion of contemporary legal issues.
The competition will accommodate a maximum of 36 teams. The Preliminary Rounds will be conducted virtually, while the subsequent rounds will be conducted physically at the Department of Law, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong.
Eligibility Criteria
- The competition is open to bona fide students enrolled in a regular Undergraduate Law Programme, including a Three-Year or Five-Year LL.B., or a Postgraduate Law Programme (LL.M.), offered by an institution recognised by the Bar Council of India.
- Each recognised University, Law School, or College may nominate only one team.
- Each team must consist of two or three members.
- In a three-member team, two members shall serve as Speakers and one member shall serve as the Researcher.
- In a two-member team, both participants shall serve as Speakers, and either member may undertake the Researcher Test.
Number of Positions
The competition is limited to a maximum of 36 teams from Universities and Law Colleges across the country.
Mode
The Preliminary Rounds will be conducted in virtual mode through Google Meet on September 29–30, 2026. The Octa-Final, Quarter-Final, Semi-Final, and Final Rounds will be conducted in physical mode at the Department of Law, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, on October 29–30, 2026.
Location
The physical rounds will be held at the Department of Law, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya.
Registration
Registration will commence at 12:00 A.M. on July 28, 2026, and close at 11:59 P.M. on August 28, 2026. The competition is limited to 36 teams, with registrations accepted on a first-come, first-served basis.
Registration Fee
The registration fee is ₹1,500 per team. The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable once paid.
Competition Rounds
The competition will comprise the following rounds:
- Preliminary Round
- Octa-Final Round
- Quarter-Final Round
- Semi-Final Round
- Final Round
Of the 36 participating teams, the top 16 teams will qualify for the Octa-Final Round. Eight teams will subsequently advance to the Quarter-Finals, four teams to the Semi-Finals, and two teams will compete in the Final Round.
Researcher’s Test
The Researchers’ Test will be conducted in physical mode on October 29, 2026, for all teams qualifying for the Physical Round.

- Valedictory Ceremony: October 30, 2026.
Perks
Teams qualifying for the Physical Rounds will be provided complimentary accommodation and meals for the duration of the competition.
All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation and a 10% scholarship code for Lawctopus courses.
Awards & Prizes
The Winner will receive ₹50,000.
The Runner-Up will receive ₹25,000.
The Best Advocate Award carries a prize of ₹11,000.
The Best Memorial Award carries a prize of ₹11,000.
The Best Researcher Award carries a prize of ₹8,000.

Application Procedure
Interested teams may complete the registration process through the registration link provided by the organisers.
The registration fee of ₹1,500 per team must be paid at the time of registration.
Since the competition is limited to 36 teams and registrations are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis, eligible teams should complete the registration process before the deadline of August 28, 2026.
