The Ministry of Power, Government of India has invited applications for its Paid Legal Internship Scheme for law students interested in regulatory law, public policy, and infrastructure governance. This internship offers structured exposure to legislative analysis, electricity sector reforms, and policy implementation within a central government ministry.

The Legal Internship Scheme of the Ministry of Power is designed to provide law students, postgraduate legal researchers, and recent law graduates with practical exposure to legal and regulatory work in India’s power sector. Interns are engaged across divisions of the Ministry and contribute to assignments involving statutory interpretation, policy review, regulatory analysis, and preparation of legal documentation.

The internship enables participants to understand how legal frameworks support electricity governance, infrastructure development, tariff regulation, renewable energy integration, and institutional coordination at the national level. It also provides exposure to the functioning of executive departments within the Government of India.

Nature of Work and Responsibilities

Selected interns will assist officers of the Ministry in research and analysis relating to electricity laws, regulatory policies, and institutional governance frameworks. Interns may work on reviewing legislation such as the Electricity Act and subordinate regulations, along with examining policy instruments like the National Electricity Policy and Tariff Policy.

The work may include preparing legal briefs, drafting summaries, analysing policy documents, and supporting internal documentation processes. Interns may also assist in reviewing regulatory reforms, stakeholder consultations, and committee-level policy initiatives related to the power sector.

Participants will be required to submit a brief report or presentation at the conclusion of the internship based on their assigned work and research outcomes.

Eligibility Criteria

Applicants must be enrolled in or have recently graduated from a recognised law programme including LL.B., LL.M., or Ph.D. in Law. For undergraduate law students, completion of at least the second year or equivalent semester is required at the time of application.

Postgraduate students must have completed at least the first semester of their programme. Recent graduates awaiting admission to higher studies may also apply if they meet the minimum academic threshold and apply within the prescribed time window.

Applicants should have strong academic records and a good command of English, along with the ability to conduct legal research and draft analytical documents.

Duration and Location

The internship is conducted on-site at the Ministry of Power office in New Delhi or at designated locations as determined by the Ministry. The minimum duration of the internship is six weeks and the maximum duration is six months, depending on the assignment requirements and mutual agreement between the intern and the Ministry.

Stipend and Certification

This is a paid legal internship. Selected interns will receive a monthly stipend of ₹5,000 during the internship period. A Certificate of Completion will be issued upon successful fulfilment of attendance requirements, submission of deliverables, and completion of the internship tenure.
