NUSRL Ranchi invites abstracts for its seminar on Geriatric Jurisprudence.
About the Organisation
National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi was established under the NUSRL Act, 2010 by the Government of Jharkhand. The university has steadily grown into a reputed institution known for its focus on legal education, research, and academic excellence. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in law and has contributed significantly to producing legal professionals who have excelled in litigation, judiciary, academia, and policy-making.
The seminar is being organised in collaboration with the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), an autonomous body functioning under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India. NISD plays an important role in policy development, research, and training in areas such as social defence, welfare of senior citizens, and rehabilitation initiatives.
About the Seminar
The seminar focuses on the emerging concept of geriatric jurisprudence, which examines the legal rights and protections of elderly individuals. With India witnessing a steady increase in its ageing population, there is a growing need to address legal and policy challenges related to senior citizens.
The seminar aims to shift the conversation from a welfare-based perspective to a rights-based approach. It emphasises the importance of dignity, autonomy, and legal protection for the elderly, in line with constitutional values. Participants will have the opportunity to engage in discussions on existing legal frameworks, identify gaps in the system, and propose reforms.
The event also seeks to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue by bringing together students, researchers, and professionals interested in the intersection of law, policy, and social justice.
Themes and Sub-Themes
Theme I focuses on the legal framework surrounding elder care and related issues. It includes topics such as elder abuse and neglect, rights-based approaches to care, testamentary and property rights, and constitutional principles of dignity. It also includes critical analysis of existing legislation such as the Maintenance and Welfare of Parents and Senior Citizens Act, 2007, and issues relating to legal autonomy in later life.
Theme II deals with substance abuse among the elderly and related legal and policy concerns. It includes discussions on addiction in later life, access to healthcare and rehabilitation, vulnerability and legal protection, and frameworks for de-addiction and therapeutic jurisprudence.
