About Birla Global University

Birla Global University (BGU), Bhubaneswar is a private self-financed university established under the Birla Global University Odisha Act, 2015. It is located on a 30-acre campus at IDCO Plot No. 2, Gothapatna, Bhubaneswar.

The university comprises seven schools, including the Birla School of Law (BSOL), which was established in 2018 to provide legal education with strong infrastructure and distinguished faculty.

About the Opportunity

The 1st Birla Mediation Competition 2026 is a national-level competition organised by the Birla School of Law in honour of founders Late B. K. Birla and Late Sarala Birla.

The competition focuses on mediation, negotiation, communication, client counselling, problem-solving and collaborative dispute resolution. It emphasises principled dialogue, party autonomy, confidentiality, relationship preservation and mutually acceptable solutions.

The competition will be conducted in four stages: Preliminary Rounds, Quarter Finals, Semi-Finals and Final Round. The Preliminary and Quarter Final rounds will be held online, while the Semi-Finals and Finals will take place at the Birla Global University campus in Bhubaneswar.

Mode

The Preliminary and Quarter Final rounds will be conducted online. The Semi-Finals and Finals will be conducted onsite at Birla Global University, Bhubaneswar.

Location

The Semi-Finals and Finals will be held at IDCO Plot No. 2, Gothapatna, Bhubaneswar, Odisha.

Registration Fee

The registration fee is ₹1,000 per team.

The registration fees are non-refundable after payment.

Deadline

The registration and payment deadline is September 30, 2026.

The accommodation payment deadline for qualifying teams is October 23, 2026.

Practice Areas

The competition focuses on mediation, negotiation, client counselling, communication, problem-solving and collaborative dispute resolution.

Perks

Accommodation for teams qualifying for the Semi-Final and Final rounds is available for an additional ₹2,000 per team.

The organisers will arrange transport from the accommodation to the competition venue. Teams are responsible for their own travel to Bhubaneswar.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Students enrolled in three-year or five-year integrated law degree programmes may participate.
  • Participants must be enrolled in a university, law school, college or department in India.
  • Multiple teams may participate from the same institution.
  • Each team must consist of three members: one Mediator, one Client and one Counsel.

Roles & Responsibilities

Mediation and Negotiation

The Client and Counsel will form the Negotiating Team, while the Mediator will be evaluated separately. Participants will engage in mediation sessions involving issue identification, discussion, negotiation, option generation and settlement or closure.

Client Counselling

The competition will assess participants on their ability to communicate effectively, understand disputes and work towards mutually acceptable solutions.

Problem-Solving

Participants will be expected to demonstrate problem-solving and collaborative dispute resolution skills while maintaining party autonomy and confidentiality.

Application Procedure

Interested teams should register and make the required payment through the QR code or payment links provided by the organisers in the brochure.

All correspondence and team member details must be communicated through the authorised head of the participating institution.
