About the Constitutional Law Society, NLU Odisha
The Constitutional Law Society (CLS) is a student body at National Law University Odisha dedicated to promoting academic engagement with constitutional law and related public law issues through competitions, publications, and scholarly discussions.
The Society has announced the 4th NLUO-CLS Essay Writing Competition (2026) to encourage critical analysis of contemporary constitutional questions and comparative constitutionalism.
About the Opportunity
The Constitutional Law Society is inviting law students and legal professionals to participate in the 4th NLUO-CLS Essay Writing Competition 2026.
The competition is based on the following themes:
- The Proportionality Test: Rights, Restriction, and Dissent in Constitutional India
- Borrowed Constitutions: Transplant, Translation, and Transformation in Comparative Constitutionalism
Participants are encouraged to present original perspectives on constitutional issues, including reasonable restrictions, liberty, foreign precedents, and constitutional rights. The competition also covers topics such as the threshold for bail under the UAPA, regulation of hate speech, judicial borrowing, comparative federalism, constitutional amendment design, and the use of foreign precedents in Indian constitutional jurisprudence.
Registration Fee
The registration fee is as follows:
- NLU Odisha Students: ₹250 for single authorship and ₹400 for co-authorship.
- Non-NLU Odisha Students: ₹300 for single authorship and ₹500 for co-authorship.
Deadline
The last date for registration is August 28, 2026.
The last date for essay submission is September 18, 2026.
Prizes
The competition offers the following awards:
- Winner: ₹7,500 cash prize, publication in the CLS Blog (after incorporating reviewer comments), and a ranked certificate.
- Runner-Up: ₹5,000 cash prize, publication in the CLS Blog (after incorporating reviewer comments), and a ranked certificate.
- Second Runner-Up: ₹2,500 cash prize, publication in the CLS Blog (after incorporating reviewer comments), and a ranked certificate.
- All participants will receive a Certificate of Participation.
