Standard Chartered is inviting applications for the position of Legal Counsel, Client Coverage, CCIB, based in Mumbai, India. The role forms part of the Bank’s Legal function and supports its Corporate and Investment Banking and Transaction Banking businesses in India.
The position involves providing commercially focused legal advice, supporting business initiatives, managing legal and regulatory risks, and working with stakeholders across the Bank.
About the Opportunity
The Legal Counsel will provide legal support to the CIB and TB businesses in India and work with internal stakeholders on legal, regulatory and business matters. The role also involves supporting the implementation of global products, initiatives and documentation in India while ensuring compliance with local legal and regulatory requirements.
The position requires collaboration with Product, Business, Compliance, Operations, Documentation and other stakeholders. The successful candidate will also support strategic and cross-border legal and business initiatives across the Standard Chartered franchise.

Eligibility Criteria
- Candidates must hold an LL.B. (Bachelor of Laws) degree.
- Candidates must have a minimum of 7–8 years of experience in banking and finance, gained in private practice and/or an in-house legal function.
Roles & Responsibilities
Legal Advisory
- Provide timely, practical and commercially focused legal support to the CIB and TB businesses in India.
- Provide strategic legal advice to support business growth while identifying, assessing and managing legal risks.
- Advise on complex legal, regulatory and business matters affecting the Bank’s operations in India.
Documentation
- Support the adaptation and implementation of global products, initiatives and documentation in India.
- Ensure local documents are aligned with global documents and processes.
- Identify gaps in legal processes and documentation and initiate review or remediation where required.
- Establish and enhance legal processes and documentation standards.
Risk Management
- Identify, assess and categorise legal risks arising from products, transactions, documentation and business initiatives.
- Determine matters requiring approvals, waivers or escalation under applicable policies and governance frameworks.
- Provide legal guidance while balancing commercial objectives with legal, regulatory and reputational risk considerations.
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure documentation complies with applicable laws, regulations and Group governance standards.
- Conduct periodic reviews of product governance documents.
- Identify, escalate, mitigate and resolve risk, conduct and compliance matters.
Stakeholder Management
- Work with Legal, Business, Product, Compliance, Audit, Risk, Credit, Documentation and Operations teams.
- Engage with law firms, external auditors, other banks and financial institutions, and regulators.
- Collaborate with Legal teams across Standard Chartered’s network locations.
