The High Court of Meghalaya invites applications for engagement of Law Clerks-cum-Legal Research Assistants on a contractual basis at Shillong.
About the High Court of Meghalaya
High Court of Meghalaya is a constitutional court established in March 2013 under the provisions of the Constitution of India and the North-Eastern Areas (Reorganisation) Act, 1971. The Court exercises jurisdiction over the State of Meghalaya and plays a crucial role in adjudicating constitutional, civil, criminal, administrative, and service law matters within the region.
As a constitutional court, it contributes significantly to the development of regional jurisprudence while ensuring enforcement of fundamental rights and statutory protections. Judicial clerkships at High Courts provide young legal professionals with structured exposure to judicial research, drafting assistance, and courtroom processes at an advanced level of litigation practice.
Engagement as a Law Clerk-cum-Legal Research Assistant offers candidates an opportunity to work closely with judges and judicial officers while strengthening analytical and doctrinal research skills relevant to constitutional and appellate litigation environments.
About the Opportunity
The High Court of Meghalaya has released an official notification inviting applications for contractual engagement to two positions of Law Clerks-cum-Legal Research Assistants under the Scheme for Engaging Law Clerks in the High Court.
Selected candidates will assist the Court in legal research, case law analysis, preparation of judicial briefs, and drafting-related support functions. The role is designed to provide early-career law graduates with exposure to judicial decision-making processes and the internal functioning of a constitutional court.
This engagement is particularly valuable for candidates planning careers in litigation, judicial clerkships, public law research, or higher academic study in constitutional and administrative law.
Nature of Work Responsibilities and Exposure
Selected Law Clerks-cum-Legal Research Assistants will support the Court in conducting detailed legal research on statutory provisions, constitutional questions, and precedents relevant to matters listed before the Bench. These assignments strengthen doctrinal interpretation skills and enhance familiarity with judicial reasoning methodologies.
Candidates will assist in analysing case records, identifying legal issues arising in pending matters, and preparing structured research notes to support judicial deliberations. Exposure to such work helps develop clarity in legal writing and improves understanding of litigation strategy from a judicial perspective.
The role may also involve assisting in preparation of draft orders, summaries of arguments, and compilation of case-law references. Participation in these activities provides practical insight into how courts evaluate competing submissions and arrive at reasoned decisions.
Through continuous interaction with judicial documentation workflows, selected candidates will gain valuable experience relevant to appellate practice and constitutional adjudication environments.
