About the Competition

The 1st Justice D.P. Gupta Moot Court Competition, 2026 is being organised by the School of Legal Studies, Babu Banarasi Das University, to promote advocacy, legal research, drafting skills, and practical legal education among law students. The competition is dedicated to the legacy of Hon’ble Mr. Justice Dwarka Prasad Gupta, former Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court.

The competition provides participants with an opportunity to engage in simulated court proceedings, analyse complex constitutional and environmental law issues, prepare memorials, and present oral arguments before experienced academicians and legal professionals. The moot proposition revolves around environmental governance, tribal rights, sustainable development, and constitutional principles.

About the Moot Proposition

The moot problem titled Forest Protection Group v. Union of Vakanda & Ors. raises significant questions concerning environmental clearances, tribal rights, forest conservation, sustainable development, administrative law, and constitutional governance. Participants will argue issues relating to environmental impact assessments, Gram Sabha consent, mining leases, and the balance between developmental objectives and environmental protection.

Duration

The competition will be conducted from July 17–18, 2026.

Mode

This is a hybrid moot court competition.

Location

The competition is being organised by the School of Legal Studies, Babu Banarasi Das University, Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Students enrolled in recognised undergraduate or postgraduate law programmes may participate.
  • Participation must be through an authorised institutional team.
  • Teams must comply with the rules and regulations prescribed by the organisers.
  • Registration must be completed before the prescribed deadline.

Registration Fee

The registration fee is ₹3,000 per team. The fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.

Awards & Prizes

  • Winner: ₹51,000 cash prize and trophy.
  • Runner-Up: ₹31,000 cash prize and trophy.
  • Best Speaker: ₹5,100 cash prize and trophy.
  • Best Memorial: ₹5,100 cash prize and trophy.
  • Best Researcher: ₹5,100 cash prize and trophy.
