About CLDP

CLDP works at the intersection of law, commerce, and diplomacy and operates in more than 85 countries. Legal interns support teams working across different regions and specialised areas of international law.

About the Opportunity

CLDP is inviting applications for its Spring 2027 Legal Internship. Selected interns will support one of the Asia-Pacific, Cyber and Telecommunications, Energy and Minerals, Eurasia, Europe, Latin America and the Caribbean, or Middle East and Africa teams.

Interns will conduct legal research for case studies, develop background papers on complex international law issues, and draft objective and legal memoranda. Their work may cover issues including regional customs unions, trade and investment framework agreements, international franchising, and judicial systems.

Mode

The internship is conducted in person. Telecommuting is not permitted.

Location

Interns must be located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area for the semester.

Working Hours

Interns must be able to work at least 16 hours per week for a minimum of eight weeks.

Stipend

The internships are unpaid. Interns are eligible for a transit subsidy, and previous interns have often received academic credit or stipends from their law schools.

Applications are accepted on a rolling basis.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be current 2L or 3L law students.
  • Applicants must be U.S. citizens.
  • Applicants must remain enrolled in school for the duration of the internship.
  • Applicants must be able to work at least 16 hours per week for a minimum of eight weeks.
  • Applicants must be located in the Washington, DC metropolitan area for the semester.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Conduct legal research to prepare case studies.
  • Research issues relating to international law and commercial law.
  • Support teams working on varied legal and policy matters.

Drafting

  • Develop background papers on complex issues of international law.
  • Draft objective and legal memoranda.
  • Prepare written materials on topics such as regional customs unions, trade and investment framework agreements, international franchising, and judicial systems.
