BCIL invites applications for Country Rapporteurs for its Human Rights & Protection Monitoring Programme, a paid research opportunity.
About Bangladesh Centre for International Law (BCIL)
The Centre is an independent, non-profit and non-partisan organisation for research, advocacy and training in international law.
About the Opportunity
BCIL is launching the inaugural Human Rights & Protection Monitoring Programme, a country-focused research initiative producing short, current and properly sourced reports for publication as the BCIL International Law Update.
Selected Country Rapporteurs will monitor specific issues concerning their own country and prepare concise updates on recent developments relating to human rights, asylum and refugee protection, gender-based violence, political or religious persecution, nationality and statelessness, non-state actors and other designated protection concerns.
Each update is 800 to 1,000 words, excluding citations, with every material fact cited in OSCOLA (4th edn). No doctrinal legal analysis is required; the update should explain what has recently happened or changed, the current situation on the assigned issue, and what credible and current sources report.
Eligibility Criteria
- The inaugural phase is open to nationals of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, Iran and Somalia.
- The programme is open to emerging researchers from law, human rights, international relations, political science, sociology, criminology, security studies, gender studies, development studies and related disciplines.
- Applicants do not need to be a lawyer or to write legal analysis.
Honorarium
- Bangladesh: 1,000 BDT per accepted report, paid by bKash, Nagad, Rocket, bank transfer or another mobile financial service, with a bonus of 2,000 BDT for every three accepted reports.
- Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, Iran and Somalia: USD 15 per accepted report, paid by international bank transfer, with a bonus of USD 30 for every three accepted reports.
- Applying is free. Payment is made only after formal acceptance, and no payment is made for reports that are not accepted.
Publication
Accepted reports may be published on the Centre’s website as a BCIL International Law Update under the Rapporteur’s own name.
Selection Process
Selection focuses on research ability, understanding of the country or topic, source-evaluation skills, and accurate, concise and independent writing. Where more than one researcher is interested in the same topic, BCIL will consider both the timing and the quality of the work: an earlier suitable submission may receive priority, but being first does not guarantee acceptance, and a materially stronger report may prevail.
Every report will undergo rigorous BCIL review, and revisions may be requested. Submission does not guarantee acceptance, payment or publication. Reports must be the applicant’s own work: AI-generated or substantially AI-written reports, fabricated or unverifiable citations, and plagiarised material will be rejected.
Contact
For further information, applicants may contact the Centre at info@bcil.bd.
Application Procedure
Applying is free. Interested applicants may apply as Country Rapporteurs through the application form on the programme page, where the country-specific research areas and honorarium details are also available. Applicants should keep their CV ready and select their country to confirm eligibility.
