About FSSAI
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India is a statutory body under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. Established under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006, it sets science-based standards for food and regulates its manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import to ensure safe and wholesome food for human consumption.
About the Opportunity
Applications are invited from Indian nationals for engagement as Legal Consultants on a contractual basis under Legal Consultant Notice-01/2026. The consultants will support the Legal Cell on litigation, legal documentation, regulatory interpretation and coordination with government authorities. This is a full-time engagement; consultants cannot take up another assignment during the contract.

Tenure
The initial contract is for one year. Annual extensions may be granted based on performance and functional requirements, up to a total of three years. The engagement is temporary and does not confer a right to permanent employment.
Remuneration
Fixed consolidated remuneration of ₹70,000 per month. A five per cent annual increment applies if the engagement extends beyond one year. Separate house rent allowance and medical benefits are not payable. Official outstation travel is governed by the applicable travel allowance rules.
Working Hours
Normal working hours are 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. Consultants may need to work beyond these hours or on weekends and holidays when required.

Eligibility Criteria
- Indian citizenship.
- A regular bachelor’s degree in law from a recognised university or another institution approved under the conditions in the official advertisement. Open university and distance education law degrees are not considered.
- At least five years of legal experience.
- Maximum age of 58 years as on the closing date.
- Candidates must meet the required educational qualifications and experience by the application deadline.
- Working knowledge of MS Office, the internet and relevant digital tools.
Roles & Responsibilities
- Handle, monitor and coordinate cases pending before courts and tribunals, including case documentation and follow-up with stakeholders.
- Draft, review and vet regulations, agreements, memoranda of understanding, contracts, tenders, policies, advisories and legal pleadings.
- Provide legal interpretation and advice on statutory provisions, rules, regulations and court orders.
- Prepare opinions, counter-affidavits and pleadings, and coordinate with the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Department of Legal Affairs and other authorities.
- Verify professional fee bills submitted by law firms and advocates against supporting documents.
- Prepare briefing notes and case briefs, and undertake assigned legal research and analysis.
Selection Process
Selection will be through a walk-in interview. Shortlisted candidates will receive communication by email or telephone with at least one week’s notice. Original documents must be produced when requested.
