Shipping Corporation of India (SCI) is a Navratna public sector undertaking with a diversified fleet. Its services cover containers, liquid and dry bulk cargo, offshore operations, gas, passenger transport and break-bulk shipping. The company also mans and manages vessels on behalf of government bodies.

About the Opportunity

SCI invites applications from eligible Indian nationals for one unreserved Chief Manager (Legal) position in grade E6 under Advertisement No. HR 05/2026. The role covers corporate legal work, dispute resolution and shipping-related legal matters.

Location

Mumbai. The appointee may be transferred, deputed or assigned to work for SCI divisions, branch offices, departments, joint ventures, subsidiaries or other entities covered by service agreements.

Pay Scale and Benefits

The E6 IDA pay scale is ₹90,000–₹2,40,000. Benefits include industrial-pattern dearness allowance, perks at 35% of basic pay, performance-related pay, company accommodation or HRA, medical facilities, pension, provident fund and gratuity under company rules. Company accommodation is subject to availability.

Probation

One year of probation cum training, followed by confirmation subject to successful completion and verification.

Deadline

Online registration and fee payment close on October 13, 2026. The signed physical application and supporting documents must also reach SCI by October 13, 2026.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Indian nationals with a full-time Bachelor’s Degree in Law or Post Graduate Degree in Law from a Bar Council of India-approved college, with at least 60% marks.
  • At least 13 years of post-qualification experience in a corporate legal department.
  • Company Secretary qualification is desirable.
  • Hands-on experience in commercial contracts and deeds, civil and criminal litigation, arbitration including AMRCD, labour and service matters, RTI compliance, corporate governance and merchant shipping conventions.
  • Public-sector candidates must have completed at least two years in the preceding E5 grade, with IDA scale ₹80,000–₹2,20,000 or equivalent pre-revised CDA/IDA scales.
  • Private-sector candidates must draw gross CTC of at least ₹19 lakh annually and work for an organisation with average annual turnover of at least ₹75 crore over the three financial years ending 2025–26. Audited balance sheets are required.

Age, experience and the required previous-grade service or CTC are assessed as on August 1, 2026. Qualifications must be from recognised institutions; equivalent percentage certificates are required for CGPA or letter grades, without rounding off.

Age Limit

The upper age limit is 45 years as on August 1, 2026. Relaxations for PwBD and ex-servicemen follow Government of India guidelines, with a maximum age of 50 years after all relaxations.

Roles & Responsibilities

  • Handle civil and criminal litigation, service matters and RTI matters.
  • Manage general arbitration and disputes under the Administrative Mechanism for Resolution of Commercial Disputes (AMRCD).
  • Draft, vet and interpret pleadings, agreements, bonds, undertakings, affidavits, deeds, claims, notices and commercial or labour contracts.
  • Manage corporate and industrial law, corporate governance, secretarial services and commercial documentation.
  • Represent the corporation before conciliation officers, labour courts and tribunals.
  • Work on merchant shipping matters and international shipping conventions, and give or obtain legal opinions.

Application Fees

  • General, OBC and EWS: ₹1,000 registration fee.
  • SC, ST, PwBD and ex-servicemen: ₹500 intimation charges.

Fees are non-refundable. Registration is complete only after online payment by the deadline.

Selection Process

Candidates are shortlisted on qualifications, age and experience. Higher qualifications, experience and relevant certifications may be used for shortlisting at a 1:10 ratio. Shortlisted candidates attend original-document verification and an in-person interview at SCI Head Office, Mumbai. Government, PSU and public-sector bank employees must produce an NOC at interview.

Private-sector applicants must provide audited reports for 2023–24, 2024–25 and 2025–26. Vernacular documents require attested English translations.
