India
- Election Commission eases SIR hearing rules
Subject: Polity and Governance
What Happened: The full Election Commission met at Nirvachan Sadan in New Delhi on Saturday, 26 September. The meeting followed reports that two Election Commissioners had recorded dissent over aspects of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls. The Commission said voters who receive notices for being unmapped or having logical discrepancies will not ordinarily have to appear before the Electoral Registration Officer. Booth Level Officers will instead collect documents from voters’ homes. The details were widely reported on 27 September.
Key Facts:
The Commission said the declaration attached to Form 6 during the SIR was upheld by the Supreme Court, and applies only during the SIR.
Outside the SIR, forms under the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960 apply.
The deadline for claims and objections to the draft roll in Delhi was extended to 30 October.
The Commission said the order starting the SIR on 24 June 2025 had the unanimous approval of all three commissioners.

- Andhra Pradesh will not defend Transgender Act amendments
Subject: Judiciary
What Happened: The Andhra Pradesh government told the Supreme Court it will not defend the 2026 amendments to the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Act, 2019. The BJP-ruled Uttarakhand government has defended the amendments, saying they have not diluted transgender rights. The matter is pending before the Court, so only its status is reported here.
Key Facts:
Parliament passed the amendment bill on 25 March 2026.
The Supreme Court is reviewing multiple petitions challenging the amended law.
According to one report, the amendments removed the right to self-perceived gender identity and tied the definition of a transgender person to physiological characteristics.
The NALSA judgment of 2014 recognised transgender persons as a third gender and affirmed self-identification.
