3 Min Read

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) is now accepting applications for its paid Spring 2027 legal internship programme.

About Center for International Environmental Law

The Center for International Environmental Law (CIEL) is a public-interest, not-for-profit environmental law organisation founded in 1989. From its offices in Washington, DC and Geneva, CIEL uses the power of law to protect the environment, promote human rights and ensure a just and sustainable society. Its teams work on climate and energy, human rights, toxics and chemicals, and trade and sustainable development.

About the Opportunity

The CIEL Spring 2027 Legal Internship offers law students and recent law graduates hands-on experience in active public-interest legal work rather than a purely observational role. This environmental law internship covers climate litigation, corporate accountability, human rights and international environmental law, alongside legal research and advocacy and policy campaigns.

The internship is offered through two tracks, one based in the United States and one in Geneva, and it is a paid legal internship on both tracks.

Tracks and Duration

The U.S. track runs for 10 weeks and requires a commitment of at least 15 hours per week. The position can be performed remotely, but applicants must physically reside in the United States and hold legal work authorisation.

The Geneva track runs for 12 to 24 weeks and requires a commitment of 24 or more hours per week.

Stipend

Interns on the U.S. track receive approximately $2,600 per month for full-time engagements, with the amount prorated for part-time schedules. Interns on the Geneva track receive approximately CHF 2,660 per month for full-time work.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Applicants must be currently enrolled in a graduate programme leading to a legal degree, such as a J.D., LL.M. or an international equivalent, or must be recent graduates of such a programme
  • For the U.S. track, applicants must physically reside in the United States and hold legal work authorisation
  • No application fee is charged and there is no age limit

Application Deadline

The stated application deadline for the Spring 2027 U.S. track is November 20, 2026.
