ILDR offers law students a one-to-three-month full-time internship in legislative drafting, legal research, law, policy and regulation.
About Institute of Legislative Drafting and Research
Institute of Legislative Drafting and Research (ILDR), established in 1989, is an ISO 9001:2015 certified Institute under the Legislative Department, Ministry of Law and Justice.
ILDR seeks to motivate, train, create interest and enhance capacity building in legislative drafting, legal research and training through multi-track initiatives across Law, Policy and regulation.
About the Opportunity
The Institute of Legislative Drafting and Research offers internships to law students to provide training and exposure in legislative drafting, legal research and work connected with the functioning of the Department.
Selected candidates may be assigned responsibilities relating to study, research or other work connected with the Department. Any material prepared by interns as part of their assigned work shall be the property of the Department.
Eligibility Criteria
- Students pursuing a 5-year integrated LL.B. course are eligible.
- Students pursuing a 3-year LL.B. course are eligible.
- Students pursuing a 3-year B.A. (Law) course are eligible.
Duration
The internship commences from the date of joining and is for a period of one month to a maximum of three months, as decided by the Competent Authority. It can be renewed for one more term of either description.
Mode
This is a full-time internship that must be attended physically. Interns are not expected to pursue any other course or work during the internship.

The internship is based at the Institute of Legislative Drafting and Research, Legislative Department, Ministry of Law and Justice, Work Hall No. 24049, ‘A’ Wing, 4th Floor, Kartavya Bhawan-02, New Delhi-110001.
Working Hours
Interns are required to be present from 9:00 AM to 5:30 PM unless otherwise permitted by the controlling officer. They are also required to sign the daily attendance register in the ILDR Section.
Roles & Responsibilities
Legal Research
Interns may be assigned responsibilities relating to legal research, study and other work connected with the functioning of the Department.
Legislative Drafting
The internship is designed to build capacity and develop interest in legislative drafting, with training and initiatives across law, policy and regulation.
Departmental Work
Candidates may be assigned other responsibilities relating to the functioning of the Department. Materials prepared by interns during the internship will remain the property of the Department.
Perks
On satisfactory completion of the internship, an internship certificate will be issued.
A minimum of 90% attendance is mandatory for satisfactory completion. Candidates with attendance below 90% of the total working days will not receive the certificate, and absent days will be marked on the certificate.

Application Procedure
Candidates desirous of undertaking an internship at ILDR are required to fill the application form provided as Annexure-A.
The application must be accompanied by a Character Certificate in the format provided as Annexure-B. The Character Certificate must be signed by the Head, Principal or Dean of the educational institution, or by a First Class Magistrate or First Class Gazetted Officer.
Candidates should send the original duly filled application form along with the relevant documents through speed post at least one month before the proposed commencement date of the internship. An advance copy of the application form along with the relevant documents may also be sent to ILDR.
Selected candidates must bring the original application form and all supporting documents in original on the day of commencement or joining.
The application form requires details including:
- Name and contact details
- Educational institution and course
- Current year of study
- Year-wise marks or percentage
- Articles, papers or reports prepared
- Extracurricular activities
- Reasons for undertaking the internship at ILDR in 50 words
- Whether legislative drafting or legal research forms part of the curriculum
- Duration for which the internship is sought
- Positions held in the institution
- Moot court participation
- Other significant achievements
- Detailed CV
Candidates are also required to bring a Police Clearance Certificate for issuance of an entry pass and sign an undertaking concerning the code of conduct and related matters at the time of joining.
The internship is selected on a need-based basis and is subject to approval by the Competent Authority. The decision of the Competent Authority is final.
