International Sociological Association (ISA) is hosting the XXI ISA World Congress of Sociology in Gwangju, Republic of Korea, from July 4 to 10, 2027.
About the Opportunity
The call invites abstracts for the session titled “Uncertain Ecologies: Environment, Society, and Everyday Life,” hosted by WG04 Sociology of Risk and Uncertainty.
The session examines uncertain ecological environments where instability is a continuing condition of everyday life. It focuses on how communities living in uncertain geographies engage with, experience, and contest uncertainty through everyday practices, relationships, and institutions.
The session also considers the tension between the creative and constraining dimensions of uncertainty, including improvisation and ingenuity alongside exhaustion, exploitation, and dispossession. Papers are invited to examine how uncertainty intersects with inequality and structural harm.

The conference will be held from July 4 to 10, 2027.

- How states, experts, media, and local communities construct, contest, or instrumentalise environmental uncertainty.
Social Structures and Risk
- How kinship, marriage, authority, and economic networks shape who bears risk and who is protected.
Agency in Uncertain Times
- Forms of creativity, adaptation, and constraint that emerge when uncertainty becomes a daily reality.
Unequal Vulnerabilities
- How gender, generation, and social position shape exposure to and recovery from environmental hazards.
Everyday Survival and Social Reproduction
- How work, care, livelihood, and mobility sustain social life amidst ecological volatility.
