About International Bar Association (IBA)

The International Bar Association (IBA) is a global organisation of legal practitioners, bar associations, and law societies. Through its internship programme, the IBA offers law students and newly qualified lawyers practical experience across human rights, legal policy, international criminal law, artificial intelligence, and atrocity documentation.

The programme is hosted at the IBA’s offices in London and includes opportunities within several specialist institutes and research units.

About the Opportunity

The International Bar Association is inviting applications for its January–April 2027 Legal Internship Programme. Internships are available with the Human Rights Institute, Legal Policy & Research Unit, Executive Director in International Criminal Law, AI Institute, and eyeWitness for Atrocities.

The programme offers both London-based and remote internship opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate law students, as well as newly qualified lawyers. Depending on the department, placements may be compulsory as part of a university curriculum or undertaken voluntarily for professional work experience.

Duration

The internship will run from January to April 2027.

Start Date

The programme is scheduled to commence in January 2027.

Both offline (London office) and remote internship opportunities are available.

Location

The offline internships are based at the International Bar Association’s offices in London, United Kingdom.

Deadline

The application deadline is Friday, 4 September 2026.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Undergraduate law students.
  • Postgraduate law students.
  • Newly qualified lawyers.
  • For internships in the Legal Policy & Research Unit and AI Institute (London Office), applicants must be undertaking the placement as a formal requirement of their UK university programme.
  • Remote internships are open to eligible candidates where the placement is either compulsory or voluntary.

Roles & Responsibilities

Legal Research

  • Contribute to research projects within the Human Rights Institute and Legal Policy & Research Unit.
  • Assist with legal policy and analytical work on international legal issues.

International Criminal Law

  • Support the Executive Director in International Criminal Law with research and related legal assignments.

Human Rights & AI

  • Assist projects undertaken by the AI Institute and eyeWitness for Atrocities involving legal research and policy development.
