About Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness
The Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness is part of Melbourne Law School at the University of Melbourne. Its Visiting Fellowship Scheme provides opportunities for statelessness researchers, practitioners and educators to engage with the Centre’s work and strengthen international collaborations.
Visiting Fellows are provided with workspace, library and computer access and are expected to participate fully in the life and work of the Centre during their stay, including events and workshops.
About the Opportunity
The Centre is offering one funded Visiting Research Fellowship for research work in an area related to statelessness. The Fellowship is suggested to run for one to two months and is available to be taken up between August and October 2027.
As part of the Fellowship, the selected scholar will present their work in a Faculty or public seminar or work-in-progress meeting and contribute a blog post to the Critical Statelessness Studies blog, where appropriate.

The Fellowship has a suggested duration of one to two months.

The Fellowship will be based at the Peter McMullin Centre on Statelessness in Melbourne, Australia.
Perks
The funded Fellowship provides funding of up to AUD 6,000 to support international travel and accommodation in Melbourne for the duration of the Fellowship.
Visiting Fellows will also be provided with workspace and access to library and computer facilities.
Deadline
Applications for the funded 2027 Visiting Fellowship must be submitted by November 30, 2026. Applicants visiting from outside Australia are responsible for obtaining and funding any required visas or insurance.
Eligibility Criteria
- Applications are invited from statelessness researchers, practitioners and educators.
- Applicants may range from postdoctoral early-career researchers to tenured academics.
- Non-academic visiting professionals may also apply if they propose an applied research project relevant to the work of the Centre.
- Researchers with lived experience of statelessness are strongly encouraged to apply.
Roles & Responsibilities
Research
The selected Fellow will carry out research work in an area related to statelessness during the Fellowship.
Centre Engagement
The Fellow will be expected to fully participate in the life and work of the Centre during the visit, including its events and workshops.
Seminar Presentation
The Fellow will present their research in a Faculty or public seminar or work-in-progress meeting.
Writing
Where appropriate, the Fellow will contribute a blog post to the Critical Statelessness Studies blog.

Applications for the funded Visiting Fellowship must be submitted in one PDF document containing the following:
- Curriculum vitae and list of publications.
- Research plan of up to 1,000 words outlining the proposed research, activities and collaboration during the visit, and contribution to the work of the Centre.
- Proposed dates of the visit.
- Fellowship amount requested, up to a maximum of AUD 6,000, along with a budget breakdown including airfare costs where applicable.
- One letter of reference. For non-academic visitors, a letter of support from their employer or another entity with which they are professionally associated is required.

The Centre also accepts applications from self-funded visitors throughout the year. Self-funded visitors should contact the Centre and provide a CV and list of publications, a research plan of up to 1,000 words, proposed visit dates and one letter of reference or professional support, as applicable.
