UNIDROIT and the International Law Institute are inviting submissions for the Essay Competition 2026 on the theme of harmonisation of private law and its future developments.

About the Organisations

The International Institute for the Unification of Private Law is an independent intergovernmental organisation based in Rome that works towards modernising, harmonising, and coordinating private and commercial law across jurisdictions. It develops uniform legal principles, model laws, and instruments to support international legal cooperation.

The International Law Institute is an institution engaged in training, research, and capacity-building initiatives relating to international law, governance, and legal development.

About the Competition

The Essay Competition 2026 is organised to commemorate the 100th anniversary of UNIDROIT and focuses on examining its contribution to private law harmonisation and future directions for transnational legal reform.

Participants are required to submit analytical essays addressing the competition theme through either historical evaluation or forward-looking legal reform proposals.

Theme

“Harmonising Private Law and Shaping the Future – 100 Years of UNIDROIT’s Impact.”

Participants may submit essays under one of the following categories:

Category A

Historical review and analysis of UNIDROIT’s earlier academic studies and their influence on the evolution of specific legal fields over the past century.

Category B

Future-oriented analysis identifying gaps in transnational private and commercial law and proposing areas for further harmonisation, supported by structured legal reasoning and engagement with international institutional frameworks.

Eligibility Criteria

The competition is open to:

  • Law students
  • Law graduates
  • Researchers
  • Junior legal professionals with less than five years of legal practice

Senior professionals and tenured academics are not eligible.

Submission Guidelines

Essays must:

  • Be written in English or French
  • Contain between 2,000 and 3,000 words
  • Exclude footnotes and references from the word count
  • Present structured academic analysis relevant to the competition theme

Prizes

Selected submissions will receive the following awards:

  • First Prize: 2,500 EUR and publication opportunity
  • Second Prize: 1,500 EUR and publication opportunity
  • Third Prize: 500 EUR and publication opportunity
  • Fourth and Fifth Prize: Publication opportunity

Winners will also be invited to present their research during an online webinar organised as part of the centenary celebration activities.
