NLSIU’s JSW Centre invites applications for a full-time research internship in law and technology.
About the Centre
The JSW Centre for the Future of Law at National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bengaluru, is a recently established interdisciplinary research centre focused on examining the evolving relationship between law, governance, institutions, and emerging technologies. Supported by the JSW Foundation, the Centre was created with the objective of strengthening academic engagement with complex regulatory questions that arise at the intersection of legal systems and technological change.
The Centre actively collaborates with universities, regulators, policymakers, civil society organisations, and industry stakeholders to generate research that contributes meaningfully to contemporary legal reform debates. Its work spans multiple thematic areas including corporate governance, environmental regulation, healthcare systems, institutional reform, and the transformation of the legal profession in response to technological disruption.
One of the Centre’s major priorities is examining how artificial intelligence, digital platforms, and regulatory innovation are reshaping legal institutions and access to justice frameworks. Through research projects, policy engagement initiatives, and academic publications, the Centre provides student researchers with opportunities to participate in cutting-edge legal scholarship relevant to both academia and public policy.
About the Internship Programme
The JSW Centre for the Future of Law is inviting applications for its in-person student researcher internship programme beginning from May 2026 onwards. This internship is designed as a full-time research engagement where selected candidates will work closely with faculty members and the Centre’s research team on live projects involving doctrinal analysis, empirical legal studies, and policy-oriented research outputs.
Unlike conventional chamber or litigation internships, this programme focuses on structured academic research and institutional policy engagement. Interns are expected to contribute meaningfully to ongoing research initiatives that examine the future direction of legal education, legal institutions, and regulatory frameworks in India and globally.
The internship operates on a monthly cycle, beginning from the first working day of each month and continuing until the last working day of that month. Since the programme requires physical presence on campus for approximately forty hours per week, it is most suitable for students planning to undertake it during semester breaks or academic vacations.
This internship is particularly valuable for students interested in academic research, public policy careers, technology law, regulatory studies, or interdisciplinary legal scholarship.
Nature of Work and Responsibilities
Selected student researchers will assist the JSW Centre in multiple research-related activities that contribute to institutional publications and policy projects. The work typically involves doctrinal analysis, literature review preparation, dataset development, and structured academic writing assignments.
Interns may be required to assist in evaluating emerging developments in artificial intelligence and legal systems, analysing regulatory approaches in comparative jurisdictions, and supporting interdisciplinary projects that combine law with empirical and technological methods. Participants may also work on coding research materials, annotating datasets, and reviewing outputs generated through machine learning systems in legal contexts.
The internship further includes participation in academic events hosted by the Centre such as workshops, lectures, research discussions, and conferences. Interns may also assist in programme coordination tasks connected with these initiatives, gaining exposure to how academic institutions organise collaborative research platforms.
This combination of research and institutional engagement helps interns develop strong analytical skills and familiarity with policy-driven legal scholarship.
Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be currently enrolled in a three-year or five-year law degree programme or a relevant postgraduate programme connected with law, regulation, or governance studies. Candidates applying for the internship should demonstrate strong legal research skills and the ability to analyse complex interdisciplinary questions involving technology and institutional reform.
Applicants must also be available to work full time on the NLSIU campus for at least forty hours per week throughout the internship duration. Since the programme requires sustained academic engagement, students with overlapping academic commitments during the internship period are not eligible to participate.
Strong written communication ability, independent research capacity, and interest in areas such as law and technology, environmental governance, corporate regulation, or public institutional reform will strengthen an applicant’s profile.

Learning Outcomes and Benefits
The internship offers a rare opportunity for law students to work closely with researchers engaged in policy-relevant legal scholarship. Participants gain exposure to empirical legal research techniques, interdisciplinary methodology, and academic writing practices that are increasingly important for careers in research institutions, think tanks, and regulatory bodies.
Interns will also develop familiarity with research design processes, dataset preparation techniques, and structured literature synthesis methods. Exposure to artificial intelligence and law projects further enables participants to understand how emerging technologies are influencing legal practice and institutional reform discussions.
Successful completion of the internship results in the award of a certificate from the Centre along with a stipend of ₹15,000. In some cases, interns may also receive opportunities to contribute to publications or research outputs generated by the Centre depending on performance and project requirements.
Working within the academic ecosystem of NLSIU also provides exposure to a vibrant research environment that encourages intellectual collaboration and policy engagement across disciplines. 📚⚖️
