The National Legal Services Authority invites applications for its one-month internship programme on access to justice and legal aid systems.
About the Organisation
National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) is a statutory body constituted under the Legal Services Authorities Act, 1987 with the primary objective of ensuring access to justice for all, particularly the weaker and marginalised sections of society. It plays a central role in implementing legal aid programmes across India and coordinating the functioning of State Legal Services Authorities, District Legal Services Authorities, and Taluk Legal Services Committees.
NALSA is responsible for organising Lok Adalats, promoting alternative dispute resolution mechanisms, and supporting initiatives that strengthen legal awareness among citizens. Through its nationwide programmes, the Authority facilitates legal representation for persons who cannot afford legal services and promotes equitable participation in the justice delivery system.
Internships at NALSA provide law students with a valuable opportunity to understand how institutional legal aid mechanisms operate in practice. Exposure to such programmes helps students appreciate the intersection between constitutional rights, public welfare schemes, and procedural access to justice. The internship is particularly beneficial for those interested in public law, human rights, social justice litigation, and policy-oriented legal practice.
About the Internship Programme
NALSA offers a structured internship programme designed to familiarise law students with the institutional functioning of India’s legal aid framework. The internship provides exposure to the operational processes involved in implementing legal services schemes and coordinating access-to-justice initiatives across different levels of the legal system.
Interns are engaged in activities that introduce them to the role played by NALSA in strengthening legal awareness, organising Lok Adalats, and supporting dispute resolution mechanisms outside conventional court systems. Participants gain insight into how legal aid institutions contribute to reducing pendency, improving outreach to vulnerable communities, and strengthening grassroots justice delivery.
The programme is intended to help students understand the administrative and policy dimensions of legal services institutions while also developing familiarity with the functioning of statutory authorities engaged in welfare-oriented legal initiatives. It is particularly suitable for candidates interested in public policy, access-to-justice programmes, and institutional legal reform.
Nature of Work During Internship
Interns selected under the programme may be involved in research-based and observational assignments connected with legal services administration and outreach initiatives. Exposure is typically provided to the functioning of legal aid schemes, documentation processes, and programme coordination mechanisms that support justice delivery across the country.
Participants may also gain insight into the working of Lok Adalats and other alternative dispute resolution forums organised under the supervision of legal services institutions. The internship helps students understand how statutory authorities collaborate with courts, government departments, and civil society organisations to improve access to justice.
The programme aims to develop awareness about legal literacy campaigns, victim compensation schemes, and welfare-based legal interventions undertaken at the national level.
