The Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU), Tiruchirappalli, is proud to announce the 8th Edition of its flagship National Antitrust Moot Court Competition. This year’s theme explores the cutting-edge intersection of Antitrust Law, Generative Artificial Intelligence (GAI), and the evolving regulatory frameworks for digital markets.
About Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU)
Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU) was established by the Government of Tamil Nadu in 2012. Over the years, it has emerged as a “Lighthouse” of legal education in Southern India, dedicated to providing global-standard training. TNNLU is known for its rigorous academic analysis and its commitment to fostering specialized expertise in niche areas like Antitrust Law and Intellectual Property.
The TNNLU National Antitrust Moot has gained a reputation for its intellectually stimulating propositions that reflect real-world commercial challenges. By hosting this competition, TNNLU provides a platform for the next generation of legal professionals to engage in high-level research-focused work concerning the regulation of dominant businesses in the technology sector.
Theme: Antitrust, GAI, and Ex-Ante Regulation
The 8th edition presents a timely and complex proposition. It focuses on the Interface between Antitrust Law and the Regulation of Intellectual Outputs produced by dominant firms using Generative AI.
Key legal issues explored in this edition include:
- Dominance in the AI Era: How antitrust authorities define and regulate market power when high-value intellectual outputs are generated by algorithms.
- Ex-Post vs. Ex-Ante Frameworks: The constitutional and economic implications of imposing a traditional ex-post regime alongside a specialized ex-ante framework (similar to the EU’s Digital Markets Act) in a developing economy.
- Innovation vs. Regulation: Balancing the need for a competitive digital market with the protection of investment in emerging technologies.
Competition Structure (Hybrid Format)
The competition is designed to test both written advocacy and oral persuasion through a three-phase process:
- Memorandum Elimination Round: All participating teams submit their written arguments. Only the Top 24 Teams based on memorial scores will advance to the oral rounds.
- Preliminary Rounds (Online): These rounds will be conducted virtually, ensuring accessibility for teams across the country.
- Advanced Rounds (Offline): The Quarter-Finals, Semi-Finals, and the Final Round will be held physically on the TNNLU campus in Tiruchirappalli.
