About the XIVth International Conference

As the nature of warfare undergoes a radical transformation through generative artificial intelligence, autonomous systems, and digital surveillance, the traditional doctrines of International Humanitarian Law face unprecedented strain. This conference serves as a comprehensive platform to critically examine the future of IHL and the evolving legal protections for refugees in an era of climate change and technological disruption.

The event seeks to facilitate informed policy dialogue among students, academicians, and stakeholders to address the accountability gaps in modern conflict and reimagining legal frameworks that can withstand the challenges of the 21st century.

Core Themes and Sub-themes

The conference will engage with several critical themes, addressing the frontier of international law:

  1. Algorithmic Accountability: Who bears the legal responsibility when AI systems commit war crimes?
  2. Autonomous Conflict: The legal and ethical implications of using drones and AI-driven weaponry in modern warfare.
  3. Climate-Induced Displacement: Strengthening refugee protection frameworks in response to environmental crises.
  4. Digital Evidence in War Crimes: The role of technology in investigation and accountability mechanisms.
  5. Material Cost of War: Exploring the economic dimensions and the long-term impact of armed conflict on global markets.
  6. Urban Refugees: Addressing the specific challenges of long-term integration in urban environments.
